Almost Ours

Sideways Farm & Brewery Site Survey
Our site survey showing the 2 homes

Counting down the days until we close on the farm, what an exciting and scary time. It’s taken us a while to find the right location and you know what they say it’s all about location, location, location. For the last 3 years we knew we wanted to be in Western North Carolina; we knew this would be home for our family, our farm and our brewery but meeting all our needs wasn’t going to be easy.

For the farm we want 10 acres, for the brewery we wanted to be close to a main road, for the family we wanted 2 homes (yes my parents are going to live on the farm as well) and all this not too far from town. It’s quite possible we drove our realtor crazy: Brevard, Asheville, Black Mountain, Hendersonville, Rutherfordton and many more.

Looking from the main house down into “our valley”

But here we are at last just about 2 weeks from closing on a small farm in Etowah, halfway between Brevard and Hendersonville, just off US 64 with 11 acres, the right zoning for the farm and brewery, 2 homes, beautiful scenery and nice neighbors.

The property has been farmed since the middle 1800’s and even has a couple of structures dating back to that era. It’s been a dairy farm, a horse farm and most recently planted with corn. Unfortunately the last few years of conventional farming, using Roundup, chemical fertilizers and extensive tillage, left the soil depleted of nutrients, organic matter and beneficial microorganisms. We are planning a lot of restorative work to regain the natural health of our soils before we bring produce to market.
